What Is Dhanteras, and What Does It Mean?

The beginning of the Diwali celebration season is marked by Dhanteras, also known as Dhanvantari Trayodashi. Dhan is a Hindi word that means "wealth."The word Theras means 13th in the Hindu calendar and refers to the 13th lunar day of the Krishna Paksha.

What is the significance of Dhanteras?

It is celebrated two days before Diwali Puja and honors the birth of Lord Dhanvantari, the Ayurvedic God, and Lord Vishnu's avatar. She is said to have emerged from the ocean's churning with a pitcher of honey in one hand and religious scriptures in the other. Lord Dhanvantari is regarded as the founder and teacher of Ayurveda, as well as a physician to the Gods.

Dhanteras Puja

Devotees perform Dhanteras puja in the evening on this auspicious day. During the puja, all members of the family attend the religious ritual and bring fresh flowers, prasad, wheat, and various pulses to the deity. On Dhantrayodashi, small red footprints are made near the house's door to symbolise Goddess Lakshmi's arrival. To expel negative energy, a square diya with four wicks is burned at the entryway and throughout the house.

Buying Gold on Dhanteras is a Dhanteras tradition.

Dhanteras is also regarded as a particularly fortunate day for purchasing gold and silver, as these precious metals are supposed to ward off negative omens. In reality, there's a fascinating legend around this notion. Astrologers prophesied that King Hima's son would be bitten by a snake and die on the fourth day of his marriage, according to folklore. When the time arrived, his wife made sure he didn't sleep by placing her ornaments, as well as a heap of gold and silver money, before the sleeping chamber's entrance. She also kept her spouse awake by lighting lamps at the entrance, telling stories, and singing songs. Lord Yama, the God of Death, disguised himself as a serpent and made his way to the Prince's apartments, but when he arrived, the brilliance of the lamps and jewellery that lay before him enchanted and blinded him. Because he couldn't get into the chambers, he climbed to the top of the gold coins and sat there all night listening to the Prince's wife sing stories and songs.
The serpent silently left when the sun rose the next day. As a result of his wife's cleverness, the Prince survived to see another day. Dhanteras is the name given to that day.Gold is thought to represent good fortune and is said to bring a substantially larger return if purchased on this day. It makes perfect logic, especially since gold and other precious metals have a higher market value. During this time, jewellers all around India will be offering enticing offers, and many people will throng to buy jewellery, even if it is simply gold coins as part of the ritual. Dhanteras is the first day of Diwali and an auspicious day when people seek the holy deities' blessings for wealth and success.
The day is said to be the best time to buy gold and other valuables because the money supply is believed to be low.
